Google Ads for Restaurants: When Is Advertising Worth It?
A bigger advertising budget doesn't automatically mean more bookings. The success of Google Ads depends largely on how your campaigns are structured, which guests you're trying to reach and what you're actually measuring.
Restaurants can choose from several approaches, from targeted Search ads to automated Performance Max campaigns. But which approach suits your business, and when does the investment pay off?
Search vs Performance Max: Which Campaign Suits Your Restaurant?
Google Ads offers different campaign types. For restaurants, Search and Performance Max (PMax) are particularly relevant.
Search Campaigns
Search campaigns allow you to advertise against specific keywords. You might focus on table bookings, group dining or a particular cuisine. By carefully selecting keywords, negative keywords and geographic targeting, you can control more precisely when and where your adverts appear.
Performance Max (PMax)
Performance Max uses Google AI to distribute adverts across multiple channels, including Google Search, Maps, YouTube, Gmail and the Display Network.
You provide assets such as images and text, along with campaign objectives and conversion data. Google then automatically optimises ad combinations and bidding to work towards your goals.
PMax can be useful for restaurants looking to expand their reach across Google's advertising channels. However, accurate conversion tracking is essential to help Google optimise towards valuable actions rather than simply generating additional traffic.
When Is Google Ads Worthwhile for Restaurants?
Paid campaigns are most useful when you have a clear objective:
- New locations: Build local awareness around an opening.
- Quieter periods: Encourage bookings on days or at times when you have spare capacity.
- Group bookings and events: Reach people actively searching for a suitable venue.
- Local competition: Increase visibility for relevant searches.
- Multiple locations: Compare campaign performance across venues and allocate budgets based on results.
The right campaign structure depends on your objectives, available budget and the quality of your tracking data.
Which Google Ads Settings Make the Difference?
An effective campaign involves more than setting a daily budget. Key considerations include:
- Location targeting: Focus on relevant areas and check whether your adverts are reaching the right audience.
- Bidding strategies: Smart Bidding allows Google to automatically optimise bids for conversions or conversion value.
- Conversion tracking: Measure relevant actions such as bookings, phone calls and direction requests, where technically possible.
- Ad creatives: Use appealing images, clear messaging and relevant landing pages.
- Campaign optimisation: Analyse search terms, costs, conversions and location-level performance to allocate your budget more effectively.
For PMax in particular, choosing the right conversion goals and allowing campaigns enough time to gather data is important.
How Do You Measure Whether Google Ads Is Delivering Results?
A high number of clicks might look impressive, but commercial results matter more.
Three metrics are particularly useful:
- CPA (Cost per Acquisition): How much does it cost to generate a desired conversion, such as a booking?
- Conversion rate: What percentage of visitors complete the desired action?
- ROAS (Return on Ad Spend): How much attributed revenue does each euro spent on advertising generate?
For example, imagine a restaurant spends €500 on advertising and can attribute €2,500 in revenue to those campaigns. That represents a ROAS of 5, meaning €5 in attributed revenue for every €1 spent.
That doesn't automatically mean €2,000 in profit. Staffing, ingredients and other costs still need to be considered. Revenue attribution also depends on having reliable tracking in place.
